Anglesey Wales 29th August

A short bike ride to Valley and the Camorron pub at Valley. This was followed by a bike ride along the beach and through the Dunes. It was preceded by a morning of wind surfing (broke my 60cm fin on the only rock in the bay).

Lake District 22nd August

Not necessarily our best idea – Chris I went to the Lake District on 22nd August to get some last minute practice. I was unable to check out the route because Rebecca had backed one of her exercise books with the relevant part of my Lake District map!!

I was somewhat surprised to find that the route that I had downloaded the night before was over Hellvelyn (970M) but egged on by Chris we went for it. Up and up we went, carrying our bikes over streams etc. Chris fell off twice on the way up with some spectacular discounts.

As we neared the top (3 ½ hours later) we were feeling rather smug and pleased with ourselves until we came across a group of 12 unicyclists (who were on a similar mission).

At the top, there was the usual crowd of trippers taking pictures and marvelling at their feats, only to find 2 cyclists going past. Then it was down the Dollywagon way – a simple decent you might think, but ended up as a carry, getting very steep in places. Chris only came off once, but it was a rather spectacular discount.

Then it was down to Grassmere and a cream tea and scone and a short cycle ride to Ambleside YHA. 3 pints and ½ a bottle of wind later and I was out of it.

Next morning we woke to rain and mist – after a hearty YHA breakfast we set off into the hills and reached Troutbeck. About then it started to rain and we realised that our planned route (over Market Place) was not going to be feasible so up the Kirkdale Pass main road we cycled to the Travellers rest for a cup of tea. It was then down the hill on the other side, where after a sideways skid at 35mph Chris overtook a Freelander and headed off to the car. When I finally caught up with him I found he had reached 42 MPH on the way down.
